Facial skin tends to show the first signs of ageing as the skin tone deteriorates and becomes uneven in colour. Often pigmentation marks become evident. Broken veins to appear in some (especially around the nose and the cheeks) and skin begins to lose its elasticity, with lines and wrinkles becoming more prominent.
While some anti-ageing treatments can make a dramatic difference to the skin texture, it is still difficult to remove the more stubborn pigmentation marks and eliminate broken blood vessels.
A new era in skin rejuvenation has arrived with Intense Pulsed Light (IPL) photorejuvenation in combination with microdermabrasion. The treatment can make a dramatic difference and may eliminate the need to go near the surgeon’s knife as the treatment modalities combine to lead to a smooth, even toned, firmer and younger looking skin.
To maximise the effect of photorejuvenation, microdermabrasion and oxygen therapy should be included as part of a comprehensive skin rejuvenation skin care programme.
- Photorejuvenation works deep in the skin to combat uneven skin colour and eliminate broken capillaries, while stimulating new collagen formation.
- Microdermabrasion removes dead skin cells and allows better penetration of the light source - at the same time improving skin texture and smoothing any surface skin irregularities such as acne scarring.
- Oxygen therapy assists skin healing and repair while promoting collagen formation - and ultimately skin clarity.
While each treatment can offer many benefits alone in skin rejuvenation, combining these three anti-ageing treatments can give spectacular results.
To achieve optimal results we recommend 6 treatments of Microdermabrasion & Oxygen and 6 IPL photorejuvenation treatments performed alternately at 2 week intervals. Maintenance treatments perhaps once or twice a year are likely to be beneficial.
(Clients undertaking BotoxR or injectable dermal filler treatments such as RestylaneR may do so during the skin rejuvenation programme).
Contraindications for IPL Skin Rejuvenation:
Clients with moderate or heavy suntan should not be treated with photorejuvenation until the tan has subsided as the increased melanin will decrease the effectiveness of the IPL treatment and may lead to burning of the skin.
Very dark skin will not benefit from photo-rejuvenation. The ideal patient will have fair hair and light skin and be prone to sun damage with early onset of fine lines and wrinkles.
Background
With the growing demand for less invasive cosmetic treatments, the effects of photo-rejuvenation in facial skin have been studied in greater detail. Small scale studies have been carried out (as yet unpublished) which have shown increased collagen formation in treated skin.
Furthermore, the IPL beam contains visible light in the yellow and green spectrum which is preferentially absorbed by blood and superficial brown pigment. This process has been shown to reduce blemishes (pigment or superficial blood vessels) in ageing and photodamaged facial skin. The skin will appear refreshed and more youthful following the removal of superficial red and brown blemishes while the laying down of new dermal collagen improves the skin texture and tonicity.
IPL photorejuvenation treatment rejuvenates ageing and sun-damaged facial skin through these effects of intense broadband light; enhanced by the effect of the stimulated new collagen reducing fine lines and wrinkles, and increasing skin tone.
Treatment plans
For the ultimate in skin rejuvenation it is advised that clients combine IPL with Microdermabrasion and Oxygen therapy (the Standard Course).
For younger, less damaged skin, the Accelerated Course may be preferred – a less intense IPL modality is used, which means that both Microdermabrasion AND IPL treatments can be carried out at the same time and at shorter intervals.
Full information will be supplied at your consultation.
Aftercare
It is essential that the client uses the correct skin care throughout the treatment course. It is imperative that high SPF (at least 15) face cream is used throughout the treatment course. Failure to wear adequate protection from both UVA & UVB rays can potentially make the treatment programme ineffective
